Wino - Create Or Die (Ripple Music, 2025)
“Create or die” is a punchy way of saying: stop making things, and you slowly fade away. Opportunities shrink, confidence erodes, and life becomes smaller. On Create Or Die, Wino doesn’t just preach this philosophy - he lives it.
Across ten songs in 45 minutes, we hear an artist in outstanding form, proving once again that creative vitality has nothing to do with age. This record presents Wino as focused, inspired, and fully committed to his craft.
The album opens with “Anhedonia”, a strong and memorable introduction built on classic Wino riffs and hooks. While less metallic than his work with The Obsessed, it remains elegantly heavy and emotionally grounded.
“New Terms” stands out with its striking country chords, which would feel at home in the catalog of Johnny Cash or even Danzig, while the banjo textures evoke a dark americana atmosphere similar of 16 Horsepower.
Throughout the record, Wino alternates naturally between light and heavy moods, making a careful balance between heavy rock and stripped-down country folk, creating a dynamic and engaging flow.
Among the highlights is “Hopeful Defiance,” which carries an almost cheerful punk energy, though characteristically, even Wino’s brighter moments retain a touch of melancholy.
“Us or Them” is a quintessential Wino composition: slow, emotional and resilient, blending sadness with quiet strength.
“Lost Souls” is one of the album’s most surprising moments. Intimate and restrained, it features delicate guitar work, subtle organ lines, and a discreet yet perfectly balanced rhythm section. Despite its serene atmosphere, the song retains deep emotional weight.
On “Bury Me in Texas,” Wino delivers a masterclass in mature songwriting. Relaxed, confident, and full of character, the song reflects the wisdom and attitude that only decades of experience can bring.
The album closes with “Noble Man,” an acoustic country-folk ballad featuring only voice and acoustic guitar. Despite its minimalism, it is profoundly heavy, an acoustic doom-folk farewell that perfectly concludes the creative journey.
What makes Create Or Die so remarkable is how seamlessly it blends sadness, gravity, joy, and elements of doom, blues, country, folk, punk, and southern rock into one cohesive statement. Few albums manage to unite these influences so organically and convincingly. This is not just a collection of songs, it is the result of a lifetime of musical exploration and emotional honesty.
With this solo release, Wino proves once again that he has no intention of slowing down.
Create Or Die stands as clear evidence that Scott Weinrich remains vibrantly alive, both creatively and professionally.
